Kurt Cobain's adulation of the Melvins was both a blessing and a curse, leading to a major-label deal with Atlantic, but also unfairly typecasting the band as a prototypical grunge act. Atlantic ran scared long ago, but the Melvins' weird wash of pulverizing prog (along with lead guitarist Buzz Osborne's trademark fingers-in-the-sockets haircut) has won them legions of devoted admirers.
