In Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle's current exhibition, dusty cultural icons like the atomic bomb and Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome are reborn as sleek objects and comic fodder, their ideological charge playfully defused. However, an ambivalent exploration of ethical dilemmas lurks beneath the carefree veneer; the viewer, for his or her part, is left to negotiate between seduction and skepticism. The stakes hit home in a brooding photograph of the artist's Phantom Truck (2007), his full-scale sculptural fabrication of the illusory biological-weapons labs that were used to justify war in Iraq — a shadowy fiction given tangible form. Nearby, a video of an endless industrial juggernaut rumbling across barren salt flats leaves a sinister note in the air.
