Beautiful young black women level their gaze at the viewer from within Mickalene Thomas' large paintings. Covered with glittering rhinestones, Thomas' compositions evoke Seurat's pointillism with an aura of contemporary bling, while dazzling with a clamor of patterns and colors; but they also goad the viewer to think beyond the sensuous surface and consider questions of sexuality, race, and gender in light of a complex history of representation. Previously, Thomas has adopted the iconography of 19th-century Orientalist paintings and 1970s blaxploitation films; here, she expands her historical sweep by looking to the decades of the Harlem Renaissance. Also featured are a number of the artist's still lifes, highlighting a different kind of beauty on display.
