Daniel Johnson: Sweet Dreams and Garbage

The tangible and the ephemeral have a dance in Daniel Johnson's exhibition (curated by Melanie Schiff), which pairs photographs of reflections in storefront windows with closeups of worn-down objects on the pavement. Appealing but understated, Johnson's pictures might be easily passed by, like the things he highlights, but they're similarly worth a closer look. Other artists have been drawn to debris, but Johnson locates the emotive and formal power of these offhand discoveries in their context — it's not simply the objects themselves that intrigue, but how they interact with the urban environment. If there's something desolate and mournful about a bike chain frozen into winter ice or a fallen flower petal, there's a precarious beauty as well.
