Before going on to direct some of the greatest films of all time, including Lawrence Of Arabia (1962) and Doctor Zhivago (1965), legendary English filmmaker David Lean adapted two of Charles Dickens' masterpieces. The first was Great Expectations (1946), with John Mills and Valerie Hobson in the classic tale of lurid romance and class divisions. The film would go on to win several Academy Awards (though Lean's next Dickens adaptation, Oliver Twist (1948), didn't fare so well). Tonight, the film screens as part of the Siskel's The Cinema of David Lean series.
