From the Evil Dead trilogy to Bubba Ho-Tep, few actors do the genre piss-take quite as lovingly as Bruce Campbell. Here, the George Clooney of straight-to-video flicks plays an embittered, alcoholic version of himself who'd rather wait for residuals than risk his chin against the Chinese war monster terrorizing his Podunk trailer town. Directed by Campbell and written by Mark Freidan (Battlestar Galactica, Smallville), Bruce happily chainsaws formalities like plot and character in favor of gratuitous gore and fanboy in-jokes (Would Ash-ionados want it any other way?) Still, the real attraction is Campbell himself — the famously affable B-grade hero leads a Q & A after each evening screening.
