Old Town School of Folk Music says…

When listening to Chet Atkins' "gallopin' guitar" country records of the early '50s, the prospect of mastering his densely syncopated fingerpicking style (Merle Travis via Django Reinhardt) over the course of one afternoon seems like wishful thinking. But even novices shouldn't, ahem, fret. His signature technique — plucking out the rhythm with the thumb and picking the melody with three fingers — is actually much more intuitive than those barre chords you strained to nail back in 10th grade. Local blues fixture Matt Hendricks capably charts out the "Mr. Guitar" basics, which still shine through in the work of pickin' heroes like John Fahey and Leo Kottke.
