With four years separating her two albums, Rachel Yamagata has carefully honed her style — collaborating with Ray LaMontagne and Rhett Miller along the way — before the release this year of Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart. From the slow, quiet title track to the rougher "Faster," Elephants exhibits Yamagata's range as both a soulful balladeer and pop songstress. Her trilling, husky voice lends itself to both of these poles, giving her music a bluesy, rhythmic lilt. LA's new indie it girl, Meiko, and the folksy singer/songwriter Thao Nguyen join Yamagata on this year's Hotel Cafe tour.
