Note:
Director Joanna Rudnick is on hand for a discussion and Q&A.
In 2001, 27-year-old Joanna Rudnick — whose family tree is riddled with cancer — was tested for an inherited mutation of the breast-cancer gene (known as BRAC). The results came back positive for the deleterious mutation, which carries a high risk of eventually causing breast and/or ovarian cancer. Five years in the making, her moving film, In the Family, traces how BRAC+ women struggle with this life-changing — and possibly life-saving — information. The emotionally fraught film takes up difficult questions: How to manage the daily anxiety? When do prophylactic treatments become appropriate? The answers aren't easy, but as one brave woman noted: "It may not be the ideal life that you want, but it's life."
