Chicago's leading jazz-series curators, including the minds behind the Hideout, Elastic Arts, and the Hungry Brain, come together to present the Umbrella Music Festival, a five-day celebration of international jazz and improvisational music. Tonight's opening program, "European Jazz Meets Chicago," may be the coup of the series. Celebrated Italian punk-jazz trio Zu delivers an oddly syncopated maelstrom of free brass, brutal rhythms, and noisy skronk, followed by Dutch trio Braam/de Joode/Vatcher's virtuosic piano-bass-drums excursions. Also promising: New York composer John Tchicai (solo and in collaboration) and noted German pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach.
