The soulful past comes to party when the Detroit Cobras hit the stage. Led by sultry singer Rachel Nagy, the band transforms vintage Motown and '50s rock 'n roll songs into gritty, live-wire garage rock. Rather than adopting a neglected style as their own — like the recent crop of retro-soul singers and genre-mining young rockers — the Cobras go back to the source, strutting out obscure but sturdy "shoulda-been hits," as one critic put it, by oft-forgotten heroes like Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint. Running wild in the Cobras' camp, these songs are alive as ever and a hell of a lot feistier.
