Laura Washington
Thursday Nov 6, 2008 (6:30–8pm)
Is donning fake fur more than just a fashion statement? Is buying fair-trade or non-sweatshop clothing a political act? Answer: it can be. For many, sartorial choices — whether eschewing pricey designer duds in favor of eco-friendly, pre-owned, or recycled apparel, buying locally-made garments instead of cheap imported clothing, or wearing animal-friendly alternatives to leather — are as much a political statement as an Obama '08 lapel pin. Today, Sun-Times journalist Laura Washington hosts a panel discussion on the "politics of fashion" and the peculiar and often unexamined intersection of social justice and personal fashion.
