Gathering artists from Ukraine, Russia, Slovakia, and Cuba, New Print Politik examines the intersection of art and political action as these countries struggle to find — and redefine — themselves in a post-Soviet world. As evident in the exhibition's screen prints, mail art, photographs, and videos, the aim is less polished product than pointed commentary (with a waggish streak). The works home in on issues such as profound wealth disparity, communication breakdowns, and relations with the West. Most memorable are four videos documenting provocative public performances, from panhandlers wearing masks of politicians' faces to artists bartering copies of lauded contemporary artworks for potatoes in rural villages.
