Ulf Puder is often lumped with the "New Leipzig School," a loose affiliation of artists celebrated by the art world — after the Iron Curtain fell — for their masterful, melancholy figurative paintings. Puder's haunting works largely bypass the narrative quality and retrograde mien of peers like Neo Rauch for desolate views of an unhinged world that gestures equally at the present and future. His paintings in muted colors depict damaged buildings and buckled highways, but Puder's technique also becomes part of his rumination on construction and collapse. Viewed from a distance, the images appear crisp, smooth, and luminous; up close, their raised surfaces hint at accumulated layers of paint, while peeled-away strips reveal a chaotic underbelly of colors and lines.
