The excellent Murder on the Oriental Express always toes the line of camp, but just when the outlandish dialogue, loud orchestral cues, radioactive glamour, and outsized theatrics threaten to turn the thriller into a send-up of whodunits, director Sidney Lumet refocuses on the basic elements of the murder-mystery plot. Based on Agatha Christie's best-selling detective novel, the film follows mustachioed gumshoe Hercule Poirot as he investigates the murder of a passenger on the titular luxury train. Of course, nearly all the train's passengers are fingered as possible culprits, but half the fun is encountering these highly suspicious characters and searching for significance in each clue.
