Despite the moniker, you won't find singing policemen in Scotland Yard Gospel Choir. The Chicago-based band, led by songwriter Elia Einhorn, charts a path through vibrant musical terrain, including rollicksome chamber pop, sweetly somber acoustic numbers, and the occasional 'round-the-piano sing-along. Certain songs bring to mind the sunny strains of Belle & Sebastian, but SYGC furtively lead us out of that pastoral pop landscape; darker themes of doubt and loss churn in Einhorn's lyrics, while gripping melodies and soaring choruses carry the day. With a strong sophomore album and recent tours with the Fiery Furnaces and Of Montreal, the group is already growing well beyond the Windy City.
