Forget Dances with Wolves. Looking past Hollywood's historical pageantry and shrugging aside stereotypes, the First Nations Film and Video Festival provides a platform for Native American filmmakers to tell their own compelling stories about contemporary life. Sterlin Harjo's excellent Four Sheets to the Wind (2007) is a coming-of-age tale set beneath Oklahoma's open skies. Following his father's suicide, Cufe leaves his small-town home to join his sister in metropolitan Tulsa. As she struggles with her own chaotic life, he sets about making a new one for himself after meeting the woman next door, who offers the listening ear he's never really known.
