In May 1939, the MS St. Louis sailed from Germany carrying over 900 Jewish refugees seeking safe haven from the Nazi regime. Passengers on this "voyage of the damned" were refused entry by the Cuban, Canadian, and American governments. Approximately one third of the passengers eventually found asylum in the UK; the rest were returned to continental Europe to not-so-uncertain fates. One of the darkest moments in the annals of World War II, the tragedy of the St. Louis is well-known. Less clear is what exactly happened to the hundreds of repatriated Jews. Tonight, co-author Scott Miller discusses Refuge Denied: The St. Louis Passengers and the Holocaust, which recounts the fates of the St. Louis' refugees.
