If the classic Christmas stories are starting to seem like cloying guests that have overstayed their welcome, The Seafarer at the Steppenwolf is a pleasantly unruly alternative. Written by Tony Award-nominee Conor McPherson, the play portrays a Christmas Eve gathering of hard-drinking guys whose lives are on the verge of unraveling; in the midst of it all, one man, Sharky, is trying to stay sober, and the devil arrives to call in his debts. No chestnuts on an open fire here; just Irish whiskey and shades of guilt. But the cast — including John Mahoney of Frasier fame — charges along with lively, engaging performances, and an irreverent spirit keeps the tale afloat through its bleak moments and flashes of booze-sodden turbulence.
