Corbett vs Dempsey says…

Rising alongside the Chicago Imagists in the late 1960s, Robert Lostutter is known for his richly rendered, subtly unnerving watercolor portraits of steely-eyed men sprouting bird plumage. Before the avians, however, came the "early girls." In these small, beguiling paintings, half-dressed women loom large overhead — in effect, a series of upskirt views — but they appear more as mysterious monoliths than objects of desire. Surrounded by geometric planes of color and vaguely biomorphic objects, the women coolly inhabit a surreal but ordered world. Lostutter observes that he was still developing his artistic voice in these early pieces; nevertheless, they lay the groundwork for his evolving watercolor techniques, and, occasionally, foreshadow the imagery of his later pursuits.
