Scarface is an icon of dirty south hip-hop: he put Houston on the map with the Geto Boys, and brought southern rap to the mainstream as the original coordinator of Def Jam South. Now, he's an elder statesman in a scene whose leading lights are more often martyred icons than living legends. With the release of Emeritus this week, 'Face is still a force to reckoned with, but if hip-hop retirements are to be trusted, this may be his last release. With the demise of both H-town rap's national profile and hometown hero Pimp C, the game needs Scarface now more than ever — here's hoping that tonight's appearance at the Congress isn't one of his last.
