Mike Lash's portraits — with their simple line-work, sardonic one-liners, and assertive, comic-book style — have always been the artist's signature, but his new work is more conceptual (though no less cynical). Paintings of sock monkeys and drawings of cows with the word "food" written across the paper are clever investigations of negative space and text alignment, while Lash's handmade books (like the tale of a parenting snafu Lies for Leo) convey familiar moral messages in unconventional ways.
