Edward Hopper, the quintessential American realist, receives one of the most comprehensive stateside surveys of his work in this far-reaching retrospective. It includes his most famous painting, the late-night downtown diner scene Nighthawks (a key piece in AIC's permanent collection), as well as over 50 oil paintings and almost as many watercolors. Hopper's sequestered life on the road and in the studio gave rise to his work's stoic themes; a palpable, eerie calm emanates from the fluid, rich surfaces of his paintings. Another highlight is 1927's Automat, a portrait of a young woman having coffee alone — which so perfectly encapsulated urban loneliness that it was once featured on a 1995 cover of TIME magazine spotlighting "20th-Century Blues."
