Artist Chris Burden put it best when he said that Gordon Matta-Clark's 1978 death was "a drag" — he was referring to the loss of a treasured friend, of course, but also to the tremendous detriment to the art community. Matta-Clark was a true aesthetic magician, from his colossal architectural cut-outs to his engrossing videos and photographs. His 1974 project Splitting involved just that — the literal bisecting of a two-story New Jersey house that was previously slated for demolition. Little remains of the poetic, cascading teardrops he carved into concrete and drywall, but fortunately we still have the photos and video in the MCA's lovingly assembled 20-year retrospective.
