Polish director Piotr Uklanski debuts with Summer Love, a heady homage to spaghetti westerns. The episodic plot is the definition of western primitivism — the Stranger seeks a bounty from the Sheriff for returning the Wanted Man — while the imagery is just as iconic, all gallows and gunfighting. Uklanski, however, cheerfully strips away whatever significance these readymades may have held. Like spiritual forerunners Straight to Hell (1987) and El Topo (1970), the film has met with mixed reviews, but if it seems a little bare, that might be the point. Summer Love wants you to answer the question: "What's left?"
