Joseph Noderer's paintings — New England landscapes and images of the Chicago suburbs rendered in a warm, old-timey palette — could easily be mistaken for collages. Their interlocking blocks of paint evoke puzzle pieces, dropped into place after a long, stately battle to the finish. Sugar Mountain depicts what might be a distant uncle's trailer, accompanied by the obligatory El Camino; June Kentucky invokes memories of summers past; and Monongahela River Rag is an odd, ghostly portrait of friends. The SAIC alum's pieces give common tropes an eerie, nostalgic glow, reworking their source photographs according to higher aesthetic rules.
