Ask two people what they feel when they look at, say, the Mona Lisa, and you'll most likely get two completely different responses. One might experience a heightened sense of beauty and joy, while the other might just as easily shrug it off with a "meh." Scientists have long wondered what's going on in our brains when we make aesthetic judgments, and recent advancements have helped explain why some objects have the ability to evoke deep, primal feelings that transcend reason and intellect. This afternoon, University of Chicago psychology professor David Bradley discusses the relationship between the brain's highly complex neural networks and our emotional reactions to art.
