Chicago's John Phillips employs witty, music-inspired titles and jaunty patterns in his large-scale "semi-intuitive doodles." The SAIC professor's latest solo show at the newly christened Tony Wight Gallery (formerly Bodybuilder and Sportsman) features a series of eight paintings in which pop-art forms dart from canvas to canvas like a retro game of Pong gone haywire. Phillips' sizeable piece Fats Domingo depicts reddish ovals thrown up against a stony, gray background. As the blobs seem to float out of the painting's frame, Phillips turns his canvas into a window looking out on an alternate world.
