Music Box Theatre says…

Since "dick" might have shifted meaning since 1940, it's only fair to point out that, here, it means "detective" or "guard." Written by and starring W.C. Fields, The Bank Dick showcases a drunken curmudgeon who trips a bank robber and, as a result, is rewarded the job of security guard. One of the more unlikely film heroes of the '40s, Fields had a knack for comedic timing and dialogue that has earned him classic status, and is every bit as hysterical today as 60 years ago.
