Samuel Fuller's Verboten! is as much a love story as it is a war movie. Set in Germany following World War II, the film follows wounded soldier Sergeant David Brent, who risks his career to be with the German woman who saved his life. As in all love stories, their life together is fraught — the stress here, however, comes from postwar Nazis who continue to promote the Third Reich's fascist ideals. Director Fuller was a rifleman in WWII, and his personal focus on a war that continues even after the fighting stops most definitely remains potent.
