With bootcuts, skinnies, and jean jackets a staple of most wardrobes, denim's ubiquity in American fashion can't be denied. But for journalist Rachel Louise Snyder, the fashion merits of blue jeans are far less interesting than the complexities of denim manufacturing. In Fugitive Denim (recently featured on This American Life), Snyder traces jeans from Manhattan fashion designers back to cotton growers in Azerbaijan and factory workers of Cambodia, illuminating the intricate web of trade agreements, sweatshop-labor practices, and political wrangling required to craft our favorite five-pockets. Tonight, Snyder discusses her book and how simply purchasing a pair of Levi's has global impact.
