Dynamic, complicated subjects dominate Barbara Hashimoto's multimedia creations in her first Chicago solo exhibition, Retrospective: 17 Years of Sculpture, Installation & Performance. Hashimoto turned her sights to a more philosophically influenced process upon moving from Japan to Los Angeles in 1996, incorporating the ideas of Jacques Derrida, as well as the concept of the tabula rasa into her sculptural, book-like forms. Hashimoto's talk this evening illuminates the social and cultural issues that inform her eloquent burst-clay books, colorfully abstracted C-prints, and various video works.
