Directed and written by playwright Martin McDonagh (The Lieutenant of Inishmore), In Bruges suffers from the talkiness that afflicts all theatre folks' first stab at a movie feature. Irish hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) have been dispatched to Belgium after a job gone wrong, and the two have nothing to wile their time away but their debates about mortality, sexuality, and the relative pleasures of Bruges and Dublin. However, the quality of the dialogue itself — and the actors' delivery of it — saves the show despite the overdetermined premise. Farrell, in particular, strikes a balance between a comic unpredictability and an emotional density he has rarely, if ever, evinced before.
