Written to accompany Allen Ginsberg in a live reading of his poem "Wichita Vortex Sutra," Philip Glass' piano composition of the same name mirrors the rhythm, cadence, and emotional vicissitudes of the poet's acclaimed antiwar reflection. While not technically difficult, the brief, arpeggio-laden piece — the first of many collaborations between the two artists — combines the pathos of Ginsberg's delirium-soaked lament with the power of Glass' drifting, minimalist melodies. Tonight, a pianist chosen by Glass (a recent injury prevents him from playing himself) plays the piece alongside an audio recording of Ginsberg.
