Dance described as "a fusion of different techniques" is often only partially so — more a whistle-stop tour of an artist's varied interests than a genuine amalgamation. But in Jamaican-born Garth Fagan's choreography, Caribbean, high-modern, ballet, and jazz elements are fully blended, with each moment encompassing a hybrid of genres. His musicality is equally inventive, with dancers tossing off tangential moves to rival an Oscar Peterson solo. After 37 years in the business, Fagan's company has amassed a stable of performers who are game for the choreographer's liberal use of high jumps, and talented enough to pull it all off with aplomb.
