Shirley Mordine's dances can overcome you at any moment. Rather than orchestrating a succession of climaxes through build and release, she paints time with a dense mixture of complex patterning and rich detail. Decades of experience and painstaking craftsmanship give her pieces a fractal quality, with the parts and the whole kept in constant dialogue. Quest, a work in three sections inspired by Jose Saramago's novel The Stone Raft, takes an assured, contemplative look at literal and metaphysical travel — an appropriate subject for a company celebrating 40 years. Mordine is careful not to obstruct the dancers: they're accompanied only by John Boesche's superb projections and Alison Chesley's distorted, amplified cello.
