$8
With Fugazi on indefinite hiatus, Instrument might be the closest thing we'll get to another one of their legendary $5 performances. Director Jem Cohen, who follows the post-hardcore icons from 1987-1996, captures some fly-on-the-wall thrills with his in-studio and practice footage. But the real treasures are the live shows and fan interviews. Ian MacKaye stops a set to call out a belligerent fan: "You're not so tough. I saw you eating ice cream [before the show]. Don't you deny it!" Wide-eyed teenagers reminisce about falling in love while dissecting the lyrics of 13 Songs. And throughout, footage of highways and cityscapes (shot in 16mm and Super-8 video) illustrates the beauty and banality of tour-bus living.
