British director Ken Loach (The Wind that Shakes the Barley, 2006) just may be the reigning king of cinematic socialist realism. In It's a Free World..., he tackles the precarious issue of immigrant labor without employing the clear-cut bad guys that normally doom social-conscience films. Desperate to start a successful business, struggling single mum Angie sets up a recruitment agency that pairs illegal immigrants with temporary, under-the-table jobs. Danger ensues for all involved, and it's to the credit of the actors and the script that each character remains sympathetic in the shadow of such a nefarious system.
