Stefan Krohmer's Summer '04 is a small-scale psychological thriller with an obvious debt to Roman Polanski's Knife in the Water (1962). Miriam and André are a permissive bourgeois couple who have allowed their teenage son to invite his free-spirited girlfriend along on holiday. Lithe Livia falls for an older, broad-shouldered neighbor, and Miriam steps into the fray, nominally to protect the girl, though her body language betrays other motives. Several dramatic scenes on sailboats pale in comparison to Polanski's predecessor, but Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others) infuses Miriam with a soulful sexuality rarely seen in Hollywood pictures.
