W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism, Dusan Makavejev's whimsical pastiche of sexual politics, is one of the most radical films — in both form and content — of the 1970s. It begins as a documentary about Wilhelm Reich; once an assistant to Freud, Reich preached the restorative power of orgasms. It then shifts into a fictional narrative in which Belgrade revolutionary Milena preaches free love, but is hesitant to actually seduce a young figure skater, the rather heavy-handedly named Vladimir Ilyich. Makavejev sprinkles in footage of Warhol transvestite Jackie Curtis and original freak-folker Tuli Kupferberg of the Fugs playing court jesters to America's repressive norms. But the director isn't naïve — he also sees, and reveals, the destructive side of sexual politics.
