Prototypical LA punks X built an era-spanning career by eschewing the standard punk signifiers of their peers, mixing rockabilly, Americana, and acoustic-folk doodles into their hybrid sound. Formed in the late '70s, the coed quartet — anchored by Exene Cervenka's Patti Smith-esque howls — earned critical praise, but their sophisticated take on punk never garnered the widespread fame it deserved. X have been (mostly) on hiatus for the last few years — but tonight, all four original members hit up the Metro, with classic stompers in tow, to celebrate 31 years of rock.
