Gene Siskel Film Center says…

Somewhere between Sleeping Beauty's first kiss and Winnie the Pooh's honey binge, a small Croatian studio called Zagreb reconsidered the possibilities of animation. The "Zagreb school" quietly pushed the medium beyond its narrowly defined formal and narrative boundaries, producing some of the most visually stunning and provocative short films of the mid-20th century. Tonight's retrospective features highlights of the era, including Ante Zaninovic's parable The Wall, about a mysterious barrier between two pedestrians, and Dusan Vukotic's charming tale of a man and his floaties, The Substitute.
