On their eponymous 2005 debut, Vancouver's Black Mountain offered their take on classic '60s and '70s rock, declaring, "we can't stand all your modern music." But the quintet's unabashed rock fundamentalism prompted critics to wonder if the band might limit their creative potential down the road. Not so: Black Mountain's latest effort, In the Future, continues in the vintage vein, but adds trippy balladry, surreal prog-noodles, and even more stoned-out vocals. It's a dense, heady brew, but with their amps cranked to 11 and their eyes pointed towards the heavens, Black Mountain turn sonic clichés into hazy, timeless rawk.
