Karl Blau plays the kind of electro-organic, lo-fi indie rock you can take home to mom. His bashful persona and click-clack production is instantly endearing, and his discography's immense scope betrays a plucky self-confidence. In the past, Blau has joined former Beat Happening member Bret Lunsford and the Microphones' Phil Elvrum in D+, a group that nailed the K Records style of self-effacing minimalism. He's also recorded with Laura Veirs, giving her grad-lit indie-folk a rich, acoustic texture. But Blau's best when he decides to drift alone with his winsome muse: try "Scan Around the World," in which his lovely, Damon Albarn-esque warble floats above spacey percussion.
