Considering Boredoms' ability to cram a career's worth of ideas into a single EP, it's not terribly surprising that these godfathers of Japanese noise rock have continued to mutate. The manic screeching and riffing of Pop Tatari — that beloved watershed of '90s fun-house noise — eventually gave way to the tribal ruckus of Super AE. Scanning their discography, you'll find elements of the Butthole Surfers' scatological pranksterism, Can's jazz-inflected Krautrock, and more recent dabblings in ambient minimalism. Last year's 77-drummer spectacle and Yoshimi's brilliant 2006 OOIOO album Taiga are as noteworthy as anything from their formative heyday. How many early-Lollapalooza vets can say that?
