Chicago gets a little greener each year, but there are still plenty of options for making this a more ecologically self-sufficient city. The concept of permaculture ("permanent" + "agriculture") considers repurposing local architecture to harness solar energy and local resources to increase sustainability. Irish architect Declan Kennedy paints a picture of the possible blueprints, discussing the large-scale urban-design principles from his recent keynote speech at an international permaculture conference in the Netherlands.
