The little-known Uniting American Families Act of 2007 notwithstanding, the intersection of immigration, naturalization, and citizenship with sexuality remains an obscure political issue and an oft-neglected area of queer studies. University of Illinois English and Gender Studies professor Siobhan Somerville, however, has written extensively on the subject. Tonight, as part of the Out at CHM series, Somerville discusses the history of "gay immigration" and how, through a heteronormative oath of allegiance and discriminatory marriage laws, the state "promotes and produces various forms of sexuality." An afterparty with NewCity follows.
