Craig Doty's photographs are urban slices of life, depicting flash personal reactions and responses in theatrical tableaux. His past images often focus on the human figure — like scenarios of men being men (loitering, wrestling) — but his new work takes on a more overtly psychological dimension. In this collection of seven large-scale photographs, Doty treats his subjects like eccentric character actors, building complex worlds around them with color, composition, and clever set pieces. In one untitled piece, a young man with a bloodied face sits prone against the cool blue of a car's backseat; in another, a teenage girl sobs in her bed, her mental breakdown underscored by spray-painted graffiti and an acid-green wall.
