Unlike Chrissie Hynde and Devo, the Black Keys are an Akron, Ohio, band that still likes (and lives) in their hometown. That no-frills Midwestern approach informs the blues-rock duo's raw, driving sound. And although they were once considered a White Stripes-alike, vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have since departed from their garage beginnings and recorded their new album, Attack & Release, with Gnarls Barkley producer Danger Mouse. While spotlighting Auerbach's soulful snarl, Danger adds banjo, synths, and Tom Waits alumni Marc Ribot and Ralph Carney (Patrick's uncle), while keeping the proceedings appropriately spare and gritty.
