San Francisco's Ettrick may be the world's first self-described "free jazz/black metal" duo. It sounds like a bad Tenacious D joke, but these guys take their squalling improvisations very seriously. Never letting the cacophony rest, Jacob Felix Heule and Jay Korber shift between playing two drum kits, playing two saxophones, and playing one of each. Their almost telepathic connection seems to work best in that last configuration, a seemingly primitive setup that ends up rivaling even the most tape-looped, circuit-bent industrial group. Fans of hard jazz, improv noise, and good old-fashioned confusion won't be disappointed.
